Alternate universe ST:TNG would’ve had Asian Americans as Data and Tasha Yar!:

In an alternate universe, Rosalind Chao would’ve been Commander Tasha Yar, the hot-headed and tomboyish head of security. As Trek lore goes, Chao was a favourite for the role until Marina Sirtis auditioned for Troi; Rodenberry then decided to bump Chao’s casting and move Crosby to Yar’s role. Chao, who later appeared as Keiko O’Brien on ST:TNG and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, would’ve — I think — revolutionized images of Asian American women in science fiction. An Asian American Yar is tough and no-nonsense, but also struggles with her femininity and sexuality, undermining chances that Chao’s portrayal would’ve spun off into a “dragon lady” stereotype.

The first time I realized I was allowed to be angry: Major Kira Nerys:

She wasn’t terrified that those around her would stop liking her if she demanded better for herself and her people. She wasn’t concerned with fitting in or being nice. Nana Visitor’s excellent role was the first time I’d ever seen a woman be unapologetically angry on the TV screen. And it wasn’t the ugly thing I’d been taught it was. In fact, it was gorgeous.

Paul and Hugh love dancing. Especially the classical pair dances of course. Paul likes to lead and Hugh likes to be lead, cause while Paul refuses to freestyle (unless he’s drunk) he’s extremely good at any pair dance.

But Paul’s favourite (slow dancing not included, cause that’s just about being close to Hugh and not about the actual dancing) Paul’s favourite is swing.

Cause while he needs to consentrate doing the fast jumpy steps they are just what his body wants him to do and so fun!

But the very best thing are the dance figures, cause Paul gets to pick Hugh up. Usually it’s the other way around but not while dancing. They had the most hilarious time practicing, but now Paul knows exactly how to whirl Hugh through the air.

And every single time Hugh shrieks or screeches or laughs out loud cause he loves it at least as much as Paul does.

Augh, my heart.

“Star Trek: Discovery” star Sonequa Martin-Green notes. “When you’re digging a hole in the ground, you have to shove into the ground first to break the ground, and then you can start digging. I think that’s where we are right now — the breaking of the ground. Now we actually have to dig — we have to do our own work in our lives, we have to reject standards in our lives, we have to pull out our own tables, we have to understand that our culture is valuable.”
Martin-Green also says the goal is not assimilation but rather “culturation.”
“Your culture meshes with mine and mine meshes with yours, but you don’t take from mine and I don’t take from yours. We live together, embracing each other’s culture, and being expanded by it. That’s the way it should be,” she says.
